Our Mission

Our Mission

Timber Trails exists to make the science of forests, wildlife and biodiversity as vivid, rigorous and enduring as the ecosystems it covers. We are a publication — built for readers who want to understand the natural world, not book a trip through it.

Observe

We document forests and the life within them with the discipline of a field researcher's notebook — precise, dated and sourced.

Explain

We translate ecological science into clear, accurate narrative for a general readership — without jargon or dilution of meaning.

Safeguard

We report on conservation science and the people practising it — evidence first, always attributed, never promotional.

A forest is not scenery. It is infrastructure, memory and argument, all at once — and it deserves reporting that treats it that way.

Editorial Charter, Timber Trails

Editorial Vision

Editorial Vision

Every article published under this name is fact-checked against primary research and, wherever possible, reviewed by a working ecologist, forester or conservation scientist before it reaches a reader. We credit our sources visibly, correct our errors publicly, and treat uncertainty in the scientific record as something to explain rather than smooth over.

Timber Trails is reader-supported and editorially independent. We do not accept sponsored content from extractive industries, and no commercial relationship influences what we choose to cover or how we cover it. Our only obligation is to the accuracy of the record and the readers who rely on it.

Core Topics

Six disciplines, one record

The subjects that anchor our coverage — each treated as a discipline in its own right, not a category of scenery.

01

Forest Ecology

The structure and function of forest systems — canopy dynamics, soil networks, succession and the quiet mechanics that keep a forest alive.

Coming to the Library
02

Wildlife

Species behaviour, migration and coexistence — reported from field observation and peer-reviewed research, not anecdote.

03

Conservation

The science, policy and practice of protecting habitats — including the difficult trade-offs conservation work rarely gets to avoid.

04

Nature Photography

Original imagery from contributing photographers, captioned and credited with the same rigor as our written reporting.

05

Environmental Science

Peer-reviewed findings on climate, hydrology and ecosystem chemistry, translated for readers without a science background.

06

Climate & Carbon

How forests store, release and regulate carbon — and what current research says about their role in a changing climate.

Our Timeline

How Timber Trails came to be

A record of our own — from founding research to the publication you're reading now.

2023

Founding Research

A small group of ecologists, journalists and photographers began compiling the editorial standards that would govern the publication — before a single article was written.

2025

Editorial Charter Established

Timber Trails formalised its independence, fact-checking process and sourcing standards in a public editorial charter.

2026

Publication Launches

Timber Trails opens to readers worldwide, publishing its founding topics and the first entries in the Research Library.

2027

Research Library Expands

The library grows into a structured, cross-referenced archive of species profiles, field reports and research notes.

2029

Global Correspondent Network

Field contributors across six continents begin reporting directly into Timber Trails, widening the publication's reach and accuracy.
